We have interviewed one of our relatively new members, Andrew Gillcrist about his experience being a part of the Albany Gay Men's Chorus. Andrew is one of our aspiring first tenor section who fantastically performed multiple solos at our latest spring concert.
Why and when did you decide to join the AGMC?
I joined the AGMC last winter cycle, during the second half of 2017. It feels longer than that because I get to see the chorus almost every week. After moving to the City of Albany, I decided to join the chorus to make friends and be a part of the LGBTQ+ community in the area. I knew that the bars are pretty welcoming here, but as someone who's a little shy, I was looking for other opportunities to meet friends with similar interests.
How did you hear about the AGMC?
I met a member of the AGMC through a mutual friend who told me that the chorus is recruiting members.
How was your audition experience with the AGMC?
I have sung in choirs before, and I had an idea about my vocal range. The audition process was pretty informal and welcoming. It is more of a friendly meeting where I got to meet the members and the music director. The music director had me to sing some scales to confirm my vocal range, and after that, I was welcomed to be apart of the Albany Gay Men's Chorus!
Your solo was incredible, how does that process go?
Thank you! It’s a pretty democratic process. Everyone has the opportunity to try out for a solo, and the music director would make the selection. People from different sections are encouraged to tryout for different solos regardless of their vocal range.
How is your overall experience?
Joining the chorus has been a great experience, and I consider the chorus like a second family. They are very welcoming and easy to get along with. I was immediately invited to go out after rehearsals, invited to gatherings and social events.
What would you say to someone who is not sure about joining the chorus?
You will not regret it. If you enjoy music or looking for to be apart of the gay community, there is a place for you. Even if you don't sing, there are opportunities to be a non-signing member as a volunteer on the board or as part of the Fifth Section to help with event organization and outreach.
